Developing Electric Propellant Refueling Technology for Geostationary Orbit Services

Tokyo, Japan, Jan. 27, 2025 – Astroscale Japan Inc. (“Astroscale Japan”), a subsidiary of Astroscale Holdings Inc., the market leader in satellite servicing and long-term orbital sustainability across all orbits, has been selected as an implementing organization for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Space Strategy Fund Program. Under the theme “Technology to Realize Flexible Spatial Mobility,” Astroscale Japan will advance the development of electric propellant refueling technology to support future services in geostationary orbit.

The Space Strategy Fund Program is a multi‑year initiative supporting ambitious technological development by private companies, startups and universities. The program aims to accelerate progress toward three primary goals: expanding the space market, solving global and social issues, and pioneering the next frontier.

The selected theme, “Technology to Realize Flexible Spatial Mobility,” focuses on integrating the development and demonstration of orbital transfer vehicles with core on-orbit refueling technologies. It also encompasses R&D for space logistics to enable the integrated operation of the services. This initiative seeks to establish world-leading capabilities by driving interoperability across space systems and the standardization of interfaces. Through these efforts, Japan aims to secure a significant share of the global on‑orbit services market — expected to approach JPY 1 trillion by 2030* — while strengthening long‑term competitiveness in future space development beyond geostationary orbit.
